Thankfully, to safeguard the sanctity of the leaderboards, The Pinball Arcade doesn't recognize scores achieved with the Pro Pack cheats activated. Should you master a table's bonuses and multipliers, you may find your score on the leaderboard. These small details make The Pinball Arcade shine. You can use the buttons to simulate the cheat of nudging the ball by hitting the side of the machine (beware a TILT!), and summon an arcade attendant should the ball get stuck in the playfield. In fact, you'll encounter a few instances where The Pinball Arcade mirrors real-life pinball machines to an eerie degree. I've never encountered an instance where the pinball moved in what felt like an artificial manner.

Likewise, The Twilight Zone boasts a wonderful design, plus dot-matrix graphics that feature characters from the show, and, of course, plenty of Rod Serling voice samples. Plus, it's an incredibly talky table, with an over-the-top announcer who describes the table happenings with the fervor of NBA Jam or Killer Instinct's announcer. Thankfully, The Pinball Arcade's faithful recreations of classic tables make the entire affair tolerable. I'm still shocked that FarSight Studios charges a $10 premium for options, but this cash grab is not uncommon in contemporary gaming. If you're looking for an arcade-perfect version of Scared Stiff, buying the Pro version is a must, as the vanilla Season Two Pack version replaces many of the table's spoken sexual innuendos with family-friendly dialogue. The Season Two Pro Pack adds an extra feature: The ability to unlock the Scared Stiff table's uncensored voice work. Each season also has a corresponding $39.99 Pro Pack that gives you the option to tinker with operator settings, such as the number of balls or difficulty levels, and view the tables' intricacies by manipulating their cameras. Unfortunately, the cash grab doesn't stop there. To buy them all would cost you nearly $200! Sadly, you can only buy a tiny number of tables in an à la carte fashion, so if your favorite pinball machines are scattered across multiple season packs, you may spend a chunk of cash just to get a few top choices. The Season One Pack boasts an impressive 22 tables.Īs you've likely surmised, acquiring tables gets very expensive. Each includes at least 10 tables and a special set of pinballs featuring cool art designs. When you're ready for additional tables, you can purchase each of the six season packs for $29.99 a pop.

Like Killer Instinct, The Pinball Arcade is a free-to-play game that's bolstered by downloadable season packs. The result is a collection that looks, sounds, and feels like the pinball games of yore, but amassing all of your favorite tables could be a serious investment.

Pinball-the classic game of reflexes, luck, and spatial recognition-isn't nearly as popular as it was 25 years ago, but its legacy of tables, flippers, and gaudy lights lives on in FarSight Studios' The Pinball Arcade.
